Inspiring Your Authentic Week

Inspiring Your Authentic Week

Stretch and Support

Posted: 17 Sep 2007 12:24 AM GMT-06:00

It has been an amazing seven days for us since last Sunday evening when I sat down to right last weeks e-mail.  We have moved our family home, from Westwood in Wiltshire, England to S'Arraco in Mallorca Spain.

There have been periods of intense stress as we worked our way through the complexities of property purchase, Spanish style and had to ensure that all of the money was in the right place at the right time.

There have been periods of intense activity as the movers arrived and we attempted to keep up as our belongings disappeared into a truck and unpacking it all as it arrived at the other end.

There were moments of total trust as our all of our worldly belongings drove off down the road with a bunch of guys we had only met the day before and when all of the money from the sale of our house was flicked across Europe, by people we had never met at all to end up in the account of someone I had only met once.

There was also the trust of my wife, who had never actually seen the house we had so heavily committed ourselves to.

There was sadness too as we said goodbye to friends and our old home.

There was inaction as we waited in our empty house for the new owners to turn up and as we waited in a rented house for our furniture to make the journey and for the date of completion on our new house.

There has also been an overwhelming sense of arrival, an intoxicating mixture of joy and feeling that we are where we are meant to be.  There is no more need for searching.  We unpacked until 1.30 am the first night and then could not wait for dawn the next morning to continue the job and to revel in our new surroundings.

In amongst all of this there are two elements that stand out - stretch and support.

Make no mistake, this has been hard and there is more hard work to come.  Some of the periods of stress and tension have been as hard as any I have experienced.  Stretching is like this.  Stretching is hard.  We go right to our limit and then stay there.  We stay with the discomfort.  We want to run away, we want to stop, but we just hold on and hold on.  And it is through holding on that breakthroughs can be made.

What makes it possible to stretch to this extent is the belief that the outcome will be worth the tension.  If we want to make breakthroughs in our lives we have to believe and believe and believe and then we have to act on that belief.

We have been planing this move for over two years.  We have had a live web cam from our local Mallorca harbour as part of our desktop on our computers, we had a common Mallorquian plant that we took a cutting of on a visit growing in Westwood.  We have read books, had Spanish lessons and done all sorts of things to establish our belief that it would happen and that it would all be worth it.

Support has also been a critical factor in enabling this to happen, partly the support of the professionals who have helped with purchase and sale and moving both belongings and money.  And by far the most important support has come from loving family and friends who have themselves stretched to help us to make our dream come true.

When we stretch and commit to something bold and amazing we also open ourselves up to finding levels of love and support that we could never possibly have foreseen when we made the decision and yet have been completely critical to it being realised.

We do not need to know the details of how we will accomplish our dream at the time when we commit to it - we only need to believe that the dream is worthy of our commitment in the first place.

To those who have helped to make our dream come true you have our most profound gratitude.

What are your dreams?  Do you believe in them?  Are you going to commit to them?
